All I can say is that it is easy to judge and disown, and that’s because we tell ourselves that “they want to be addicts”, so they’re “good for nothing” and “liars” and “thieves”.  \n\nNo! That’s your little sister! That’s your big brother! That’s your daughter! They are in pain and they made a huge mistake by using drugs. Get over that part. We know there is a “Why”, but you will not get answers starting with “Why”. \n\n“What” caused the pain to begin? “How” did they lose self respect? \n“When” did this happen? \n\nI know many of us have tried and nothing works. I know many of us have cut all communication with them. I know every situation is different and that it is hard enough just managing our own lives, let alone someone else’s. And if you can’t jump in head first and pull them out, at least tell them that you love them. That doesn’t mean you have to give them money - I’m not saying that. Some have done unforgivable things, I realize, and that is something different, but for the majority, I am saying: stand your ground, but just remember who they are and that saying that you love them can go a long way. \n\nDo not wait to say it. Just say it. \n\nYou don’t want to wake up one day with your mom telling you they’re gone… they “flickered” out, then look at all of the text messages you ignored from them. \n\n“No, I will not give you money because I know what you’re going to do, but if you’re hungry, I will bring you food wherever you are because I Love You.” \n\n“You know I cannot afford to give you money. I have given you all I can. I Love You.”\n\n“Good luck with the job interview. I think you will nail it. I Love You.”\n\nThey might not be able to be the sister/brother/mother/cousin/friend they once were to you, but it does not mean you cannot be the bigger, more understanding brother to them. Don’t do it so as to avoid regret.
