Outbound arc, chapter II — the first night out. Cast Off ended on an unresolved chord; the boat past the bay mouth, still going out. This is the answer to that suspension: hours out, alone on open water, the harbor light dropped below the horizon behind her. First night at sea — vast, dark, a little afraid — until the fear turns to a clean, wide calm, because she learns to steer by the stars now that the light is gone. Musically it resolves what Cast Off left open: the D it leaned on becomes home, a I-vi-IV-V turn in D major (D-Bm-G-A) that lands at last, then keeps orbiting outward. Slower and more spacious at 110 BPM. The wake quiets to a distant undertow, the farewell horn fades further, and a new element arrives — the beacon: a lone slow high pulse that sweeps and fades, first the last flash of the harbor light going under, then the cold steady points of the stars taking its place.
