The Changing Rooms
Every room changes. Every life changes. But one change was forbidden.
Far beyond our solar system, an advanced civilisation lives under the mysterious laws of its gods.
Every room on their world changes whenever its occupants leave and return. A luxurious home can become a neglected ruin. A filthy, uncomfortable space can suddenly become magnificent.
No one controls the changes.
No one is supposed to.
For generations, the people have accepted this strange phenomenon as the ultimate expression of equality. Their gods have ensured that nobody can permanently possess luxury, while nobody is permanently condemned to misery. Everyone experiences the best—and the worst—their world has to offer.
Until visitors from Earth arrive.
The humans discover that the phenomenon can be manipulated.
They teach one family how to hack the system.
Suddenly, the family's home never changes. Their rooms remain beautiful, luxurious and perfect.
But their discovery has a devastating consequence.
As the family's rooms remain perfect, everyone else's rooms become progressively worse. Homes that once alternated between comfort and hardship are now becoming filthy, neglected and almost impossible to live in.
An entire civilisation is plunged into chaos.
The people don't simply want their old world back.
They want revenge.
The family and the visitors from Earth are branded criminals—not merely for causing suffering, but for committing the one act their gods explicitly forbade: changing the system itself.
Now the family and their Earth companions are hunted across an alien world that has turned against them.
Their only hope is to reach the place where they first arrived and find a way back to Earth.
But the people of the planet are determined to stop them.
To them, this isn't simply a crime.
It is an act against the gods.
As the hunt closes in, the fugitives face an impossible choice: escape and leave an entire civilisation suffering because of their actions—or surrender themselves and risk becoming the sacrifice required to restore the balance.
