Escapist Meditation

A few days ago I came upon the news of the Surge Synth Team having released a free emulation of Oberheim OB-X. I played with it a little bit, loved the sound, and thought that it would be interesting to try controlling it with something else than a keyboard, and the first thing I tried was my bass guitar. Of course, bass guitar is known for its heavy attack, so you have to compress it really hard before converting to MIDI in order to avoid wild volume jumps, but after it’s evened out, the feel and dynamics of the original live instrument are somehow preserved, which is very different from the feel you get when playing on keys. The less than predictable audio-to-midi conversion adds to the uniqueness of the experience. So here is a little sketch improvised on the spot late at night - just the bass and the synth it controls in real time. I wonder where this can lead me further down the road… Photo by Eugeny Kurskov
