Cover of "Eve of Destruction", written by P. F. Sloan, released as a single on 26 July 1965 by Barry McGuire from his album "Eve of Destruction". Producers were Lou Adler, P. F. Sloan and Steve Barri. The song written as a protest against the background of the Vietnam War, the US draft, the threat of nuclear war, the Civil Rights Movement, turmoil in the Middle East and the US space program. Barry McGuire said that the song was recorded in one take on a Tuesday morning, with him reading the lyrics from a crumpled piece of paper. A rough mix of the one take happened to be leaked to a disc jockey who began playing it. On the following Monday at 7:00 am, McGuire got a call from his record company telling him to turn on the radio -- "Eve of Destruction" was playing. This rough, first-take version became an instant hit, peaking at #1 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart and it reached #3 on the UK Singles chart. It became a #1 hit in Canada, West Germany, Norway, Sweden as well as on the US Cash Box Top 100. Despite its success, the song was banned by some American radio stations who claimed that it was "an aid to the enemy in Vietnam".
