The Quatermaster

For sixty years, the Quartermaster has watched the fortress outlast seasons, rulers and political certainties. His father held the keys and ledgers before him, and he learned early that kingdoms survive through less glorious things than crowns: grain counted correctly, walls maintained, steel stored and people supplied.
As war approaches, both sides speak of bloodlines, justice and rightful rule. He sees something more durable beneath them. Kings may change and banners may fall, but someone will still have to keep the gates working and the stores full the morning after. His loyalty is not really to a man on the throne, but to the structure that allows ordinary life to continue.
