The Castaway grows up in a country that is home without ever becoming entirely his own. The people around him know nothing of royal blood or the reason he was brought there. They see only a foreign child who learns their language, work and ways with unusual speed — and who nevertheless carries something they cannot quite place.
This is where the myth begins long before he has any political claim or even understands his own origins. Others start reading meaning into his calm, ability and difference before he knows what any of it means himself. Foreign Soil therefore does not tell us objectively who the Castaway is. It shows the first version of him created in the eyes of other people — the beginning of a reputation that will eventually grow far beyond the boy they actually knew.
