For a girl raised among boats, weather and working hands, the great harbor city feels almost limitless. Markets, stone streets, servants, books and noble houses open a world far larger than the coast she knew. Among children of a different class, she briefly discovers something remarkably simple: they play together because none of them yet sees a reason not to.
It is the adults who restore the boundary. Friendship gives way to rank, name and the reminder that some rooms are supposedly not hers to enter. The experience does not teach her to envy the nobility; it teaches her how arbitrary a role can become once others insist that it defines you. Years later, that childhood familiarity with noble spaces, manners and expectations will prove unexpectedly useful.
