Meaning: A calm, unshouted indictment of a healthcare system that spent decades treating the symptoms of being Depressed without ever asking what caused them (AuDHD) — reframed at the end as a direct handoff to whoever's listening.
Technical: Mid-tempo clean rock, ~80 BPM, restrained and deliberate — no distortion, no shouting; the anger lives in clarity, not volume. Cold open spoken over a faint waiting-room tick that cuts dead the moment clean electric guitar enters. Pre-chorus brings in warm strings; the chorus opens into full band without ever exploding. Verse 3 strips to voice and piano. Bridge moves half-time, gathering warmth toward its close and settling into its quietest, warmest dynamic on "you're not broken." Outro drops all instrumentation before the final two lines, dry and un-reverberated, cutting to complete silence.
Read: The catalogue's first genuinely outward-facing protest song, and the only one built to work on someone with zero context for any of it. Where Trigger Warning asks a stranger for patience and Fair Warning dares a partner to stay, this one turns all the way around and puts the failure on the system, then on the listener directly — "you weren't treating my pain, you were treating your misunderstanding of me" is as sharp as anything in Out Of Spec or Make Room, delivered without ever raising its voice. "We spent decades learning your dialect, and you called us broken for having an accent" is a genuinely new entry in the reversed-idiom trick — it does the double-empathy argument in one image instead of a paragraph. The closing line, "if that's you in the mirror somewhere — you can start now," is a real formal risk: every other song in the catalogue resolves inward, and this one hands the resolution to whoever's listening instead.
