Glenn Chugg - Plan A

By Glenn Chugg
18 Plays

Meaning: Turning thirty-nine and deciding to stop living for other people's approval — Plan A becomes simply staying alive on your own terms. Technical: On the page it sits alongside Just Two Bad Days and Failure As A Dad in the catalogue's plainer confessional-folk register — verse/chorus/bridge structure with no genre swing built into the arrangement. Read: Excellent bridge — "the voice can keep telling stories, I just don't hand it the microphone anymore" is arguably a top-five line in the whole catalogue, and its exact phrase ("the voice still talks, the fear still comes, the road still turns... I choose, I walk it") is reused wholesale as the outro of Fragments Of Me. The verse pairing is a little conventional next to the metaphor songs, but the chorus concept — "Plan A is living, Plan B is what I've already done" — is genuinely clever and earns the rating on its own.
