Driving down toward Mount Rushmore,
We laughed at a roadside stop.
Some little diner on the highway,
The only place before the next town.
The motel owner looked at us,
Then asked, “One room for two?”
“She's my sister.”
He lied.
All right, I lied.
But maybe that was safer
Than saying what we couldn't say.
A fake sister,
Yet not a lover by his side.
How do you measure something
When the borders start to slide?
He drove me through the country,
We watched the sunset fade.
Two travelers, two good friends—
At least that's what we said.
Just a reminder—
He had to step back.
She was still crazy
For somebody else.
So they didn't talk
About what they felt.
They traded little gifts
And called it friendship.
Just friends,
That's all they were.
Just friends.
At a diner near Yellowstone,
We both missed someone back home.
He looked a little lonely,
So I tried to make him laugh.
She brought a little sunshine
Into a long and winding road.
We were heading toward different futures.
But somehow, on that evening,
We found the same road.
A fake sister,
Yet not a lover by his side.
How do you keep your distance
When the distance disappears?
He drove me toward Yellowstone,
Through the Cody Gate we went.
Two friends beneath the open sky,
Two hearts pretending not to care.
Just a reminder—
He had to step back.
She was still crazy
For somebody else.
So they didn't talk
About what they felt.
They traded little gifts
And called it friendship.
Just friends,
That's all they were.
Just friends.
Then I took his hand
And I didn't let go.
For one little moment,
I forgot who I knew.
Old Faithful rose
Like a promise from the earth.
A wall built for years
Seemed suddenly small.
The water climbed higher—
And something inside me
Broke through the wall.
Was this something real?
Or only a moment?
Was I only playing
With another heart?
Just a reminder—
We had to step back.
She was still crazy
For somebody else.
But something had changed
That neither could hide.
We called it friendship
And walked side by side.
Just friends—
Or something more?
We didn't know.
Just friends—
At least for that road.
In Vancouver,
The journey came to a close.
He delivered me safely
Back to the world I knew.
I watched her walk away.
And neither of us said
What the journey meant.
Just friends...
For one more day.
